All of us require to have good credit in order to meet the criteria for home mortgages, credit cards, car loans and more. But, many of us have had economic troubles in the past and the existing economic decline has just compounded that for many of us. There are however, actions that we can take to repair our credit so that we can get back to some even ground as far as our credit ratings go.

When you get set to start on repairing your credit you will need to get a credit report from all of the three foremost credit reporting bureaus, Equifax, Experian and TransUnion. You are permitted to be given a free credit report one time every year or you can also get a tri-merged credit report for a fee. The tri-merged credit report will have all of the information contained on each report in one simple to read format. It may be easier to review all of the information if it is all on one report.

After you are given your reports you need to discover the inaccurate and erroneous information. It is predicted that as many as 70% of all credit reports do have inaccurate information so there perhaps are some mistakes that you can deal with immediately. After that you can also check for any out-of-date accounts that have elapsed the statute of limitations for your state. You may be able to get those removed on that basis alone.

Make sure that your credit report is showing your uppermost credit limits. Many creditors under-report credit limits or fail to report them at all. A large percentage of your credit score is based upon your accessible credit compared to the credit you have used so it is useful for you to make sure that all of your uppermost credit limits are reported. It is also important to keep your debt level below 20% of the credit available to you. One trick to immediately multiply your credit score is to just get a lender to raise your credit limits.

Check also for any duplicate accounts. Even if the accounts are reporting encouraging information it is damaging to your credit score because it shows more outstanding debt than you really have. People with the maximum credit scores have the highest available credit and the least amount of debt.

Be alert about paying off old collection accounts and charge-offs. Information is reported on the date of last activity so an old collection account that is not paid may really be better for your credit score than one that is paid up or even paid off because of the last activity date brings all the destructive information forward. Collection accounts are often passed on and sold to other companies and each company may list information on your credit report. When they no longer own the account they are expected to remove the information but many times they do not follow through on that later. Make sure that the accounts on your report are legitimate and not duplicates.

If there are strange items on your account make sure that you dispute them. Many folks find that other people’s credit information shows up on their credit report. This regularly occurs when you share a common name such as Smith or Jones. Make sure that all of the credit on your credit report belongs to you and is an true portrayal of your credit. Verify names, identifying numbers and make sure that the records contained on your credit report correspond with your own records.

You can also start building new and better credit. The finest way is to get a credit card, either a conventional card or a prepaid kind. The worst thing to do is to get credit from a department store, furniture store or anything related as that form of credit is looked upon as a negative rather than a positive for credit scoring purposes.

You may discover that it is helpful to hire a qualified credit repair company that has the expertise to aid you in the best possible manner. You can do some credit repair yourself but you may find that it is more efficient to use the services of a professional.
